The story of 'The Blankets'

I would like to share a wonderful story about the trio's Grandmother Linda and Aunt Marylyn. Early in Kristen's pregnancy, Linda began her plans for the children. One of the many projects she began was to knit three large blankets meant to be their 'blankie' for years to come. When her health took a turn for the worst, she was unable to continue. With the blankets not finished, she asked her sister Marylyn to continue the knitting campaign. The blankets traveled to New Brunswick where Marylyn made some progress. The blankets still partially completed then traveled back to Sudbury during a moment of remission when Linda felt she had enough strength to continue them with Marylyn. She did not have the strength and was quickly returned to the hospital. Marylyn resumed work on the blankets. Having promised Linda she would finish them, she had to once again take them back to New Brunswick. When they were done, Linda was in the Palliative Care facility at Laurentian Hospital, and in a touching moment, the blankets had returned to Sudbury and presented to Kristen for her future children.

Linda was giving person; this final gift will not be forgotten. Thank you Marylyn.

Dear Kristen & Jason:
You are more than welcome, I am very honoured to be part of Linda's legacy. I was very apprehensive when Linda asked me to take over the task of completing the blankets for her. As we all know Linda's standards were very high and I was questioning my knitting abilities if they would meet her requirements. But after a quick trip to Saint John, NB to buy yarn and my knitting bag travelling with me everywhere I went I managed to complete the "Lady Bug" (red, black & white)blanket only to find out that it was much bigger than the "Bumble Bee" so a quick alteration had to take place which meant tearing out about one-quarter of it. Linda made the pattern up in her head so I had to "wing it". I knew I was on the right track when I went to see Linda for her birthday. When I took the "Lady Bug" blanket out and set it beside her, her eyes light up like two big diamonds and she flashed her great big "Colgate" smile that we had been so accustomed to seeing and at that moment frozen in time I knew I had passed her test. To Gracie, Avery and Everett here's wishing your "blankies" keep you warm and snugly for a long, long time to come just as Gramma Howatt had intended them to. Love Great Auntie Marilyn
